Obituary by Heinrich v.Berenber-Gossler

Harald Mandt  present a unique, blessing richt connection between old Prussia and liberal England. His Prussia maxims looked in such a way, that he kept themselves strictly held to the doctrine "be more then you appear" and that he remembered: „ what you have done forgets; what you will do, think of it!"

Since his years' studying in Oxford as Rhodes-Scholar before the First World War he   had lifelong
Connections  and an insight into the English mentality like only few Germans with many Rhodes-Scholars, which studied in Oxford in the Brasenose, England and the empire  was on the height of its prevalence,  .
In the most tumultuous time after the first world he  has leaded and controlled for the Mutzenbecher group in
Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Valparaiso , he founded insurance companies  which even today exist, and to build up themselves also in Ibero America in this manner a remaining monument. Later assume the independent existence of the Albingia, one of the hearts of the Mutzenbecher group, and developed Albingia to one of the greatest Insurance Companies in Germany.  Everything happened in times of the crises,  in times of external hostility and later in and after the Second World War.
Since 1952 he was Rotarian, he was chosen in 1957/58 as president and 1958/59 as Governor of the 149th district. In spite he has resist heavy work in this time as a chairman of the supervisory board of the Albingia, he used masterfully the function as Governor. He always had for everything the right words, and I never forgot how he welcomed in Berlin the French Rotarians with the words „I'entends bien que Ie cri a Berlin qui‚ était un cri de guerre est devenue un cri d'amitie."
Harald Mandt was given the biggest honour, which ever has been given to a German Rotarian.
After two-year- activity as a Director from R.I. he was chosen  in 1964/65 as Vicepresident from R.I
He administrated this function in a manner which, the  Old Hands in Evanston said, was unique.
There have been only few people behaved so much Rotarian and business  humanely to contribute the Support of international relations like he did. He was a real Grandseigneur of old style, still had his roots in the 19th century he was born in the Year of the Three Emperors.
His greatest pleasure was that was promoted by Brasenose college Oxford as an honorable fellow shortly before his death. A large part of his hearts belonged to Oxford - His alma mater. His merits around our club, our District and the German respect in Rotary remain unforgotten. We are very proud, that  Harald Mandt was so many years a member in the oldest club of Germany. He was gone in the age of 86 years of us.His Memento will always be an obligation for us. From all these important abilities his human goodness and warm – heartedness was most remarkable. Always he took the time to make worries and matters from other to his own   without reputation and distinction. To help where always he was able. Never he lost his Subtle humor, a main feature of his character.
